TWAS-UNICAL Fellowship Programme
The University of Calabria (UNICAL), Italy, and TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, offer fellowships to students from Haiti who wish to obtain an MSc degree in the areas of pharmacology/nutrition. Duration: 2 years, extendable for 1 additional year.
Programme details
- TWAS-UNICAL Fellowships are tenable at the University of Calabria (UNICAL), Italy, for a period of 2 years, extendable for 1 additional year.
- TWAS will provide support for travel (one round trip in economy class), visa and related costs, health insurance, a lump sum of Euro 1,700 per year (or pro-rata for periods of less than 12 months) to cover local incidental costs, and in addition, *excess luggage expenses upon completion of the fellowship (*only for stays longer than 12 months).
- UNICAL will provide board and lodging at its residential centre.
- The language of instruction at UNICAL is Italian.
Eligibility
Applicants for these Fellowships must meet the following criteria:
- be a maximum age of 35 years on 31 December of the application year;
- be permanent residents of Haiti;
- hold a BSc degree in a relevant field of the natural sciences;
- be willing to register at the University of Calabria (UNICAL);
- not take up other assignments during the period of the fellowship;
- be financially responsible for any accompanying family member;

provide official copies of academic degree certificates and transcripts when applying. This documentation as well as any other documents on the academic career may be in French if the Italian certified translations are not available.

Submitting your application
- The call for applications for the TWAS-UNICAL Fellowships is open from 15 October 2011 to 31 January 2012.
- Applicants must complete the application form available and return it as an MS Word document together with all required enclosures in jpeg or PDF format.
- Reference letters: Referees must send signed letters as attachment via e-mail directly to TWAS and UNICAL. The subject line must contain: TWAS-UNICAL/Haiti/candidate's surname. Alternatively, letters should be sent by post in sealed envelopes. Only signed reference letters can be accepted.
- Applicants for the TWAS-UNICAL Master's Fellowship Programme should send their application and all required enclosures to TWAS (fellowships@twas.org) AND UNICAL, Prof. Violini (violini@fis.unical.it) before the deadline (by email ONLY).

Selection Procedure and Additional Information
for Selected candidates ONLY
- The selection of awarded candidates will be completed within 3 months after the submission deadline. All candidates will be informed of the results in due time.
- Awarded candidates will have to undertake the following in order to start the fellowship:
- provide proof of sufficient knowledge of Italian according to Italian regulations in order to obtain a student visa. If the awarded candidate has no knowledge of Italian beforehand s/he will be required to study the language in order to obtain the student visa.
- pre-register at the Italian Honorary Vice Consulate in Haiti and apply for the “dichiarazione di valore”, which will then be released by the Italian Embassy in the Domenican Republic, and provide TWAS and UNICAL copy of the “dichiarazione di valore”. **See more details below.
- apply for the Italian student visa once the “dichiarazione di valore” has been obtained in order to be able to take up the Fellowship in Italy.
**Pre-registration guidelines (how to obtain the “dichiarazione di valore”).
Applicants must pre-register at the Italian Honorary Vice Consulate in Haiti (see address below) when pre-registrations for Italian universities opens (usually mid May, but kindly check with the consulate or embassy directly for updated information), submitting the documentation required for pre-registration, which must be in Italian. The pre-registration means that the high school certificate will be checked and if the relative grades allow the holder to be eligible for university studies in Haiti a “dichiarazione di valore” will be issued. This will allow the awarded candidate to undertake studies in Italy.

When providing documents to the Italian Vice Consulate in Haiti the candidate should inform the consulate/embassy that s/he has been awarded a TWAS-UNICAL fellowship in Italy and submit a copy of the Award letter(s) that will be provide to you. This will facilitate the consulate or embassy in giving the necessary student visa.
