Solar Radiation Management Governance Initiative (SRMGI)

TWAS, the Royal Society (UK) and the Environment Defense Fund (USA) are co-convening a project to open up the debate on how research into solar radiation management - a potential but controversial tool to reduce the effects of global warming - could be regulated.

In 2010, TWAS joined forces with the Royal Society (UK) and the Environment Defense Fund (USA) to co-convene a project to investigate potential governance scenarios for managing the amount of sunlight that reaches the Earth as a possible mitigation technique to counter global warming. A series of working papers (with input from TWAS Fellows) and an open online survey made available on the SRMGI website provided the material for  a series of discussions that took place during a conference at the Kavli Royal Society International Centre held on 22-24 March 2011 that convened a wide range of experts (from climate scientists to lawyers, ethicists and international governance practitioners) as well as representatives from a range of interested NGO stakeholder partners.

The results of the discussions are currently being edited and reviewed and will be published later this year.
