Members Elected 2011

22 November. TWAS has announced the election of 45 new members (42 Fellows and 3 Associate Fellows), including 13 women. The election took place at the Academy's 22nd General Meeting in Trieste, Italy, on Monday, 21 November 2011. The current membership now stands at 1035.

The new TWAS members, who will be inducted at the Academy's 23rd General Meeting in China in 2012, are:

01-Agricultural Sciences

ASHFAQ Muhammad (Pakistan) b. 16-11-1952. PhD, Dean, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Ashfaq has developed several new techniques/patents to boost crop production and has reported 36 new species. Fellow of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, he has won the Award of Honour 2010 at the Asian Peace Seminar at the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India, the 19th Bolan Excellence  Award 2008 and the Quaide-Azam Gold Medal in 2010.

BADRIE, Neela (Trinidad and Tobago) b. 5-1-1958. PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Food Safety, Faculty of Science and Agriculture, University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. Badrie has been focusing her research on food safety, quality assurance and tropical food development. She has introduced modified processing technologies for functional properties and the interactions among food components. Of her 71 publications, 48 have been recorded in the EBSCO database of the Caribbean Institute of Food Science and Technology (CARIFST). She is a member of OWSD and the winner, inter alia, of the TWAS Young Scientist Award 2001.

OLIVEIRA, Sergio (Brazil) b. 25-5-1964. PhD, DVM, Professor of Immunology, Instituto de Ciencias Biologicas, Universidade Federal De Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte-Minas Gerais, Brazil. Oliveira has deciphered critical scientific questions determining the role of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes in the innate immune receptors TLR2, TLR4, TLR and the adaptor molecular MyD 88, TRIF and IRAK 4 during the course of infections by the veterinary bacteria Brucella abortus, which causes brucellosis in live stock animals. Fellow of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he has won the 2010 National Order of Scientific Merit, Brazil and the Piraja da Silva Medal in 2008. He is academic editor of PLoS One.

TUTEJA, Narendra (India): b. 1-1-1955. PhD, DSc, Associate Scientist, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi, India. Tuteja has made significant contributions in the field of DNA replication and repair. He has purified and characterized six novel DNA helicases from humans, and seven from plant cells. His studies have shown a new role of DNA helicases in stress signalling, and a new pathway to plant stress tolerance. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India.

02-Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology

CHAKRABARTI, Pinakpani (India) b.  1-1-1955. PhD, Senior Professor & JC Bose National Fellow, Bose Institute, Kolkata, India. Chakrabarti has contributed to our understanding of the conformation, folding, ion-binding and helix nucleation in proteins. He has delineated the physicochemical principles underlying macromolecular recognition, elucidated the structures of CII from bacteriophage lambda and some Vibrio cholerae proteins, and studied the effect of nanoparticles on protein structure and function. Fellow of all 3 science academies of India, he has won the PS Sarma and YT Thathachari Awards, and has been a visiting professor at the Universite Paris-Sud Orsay.

CRUZ, Lourdes J. (Philippines) b. 19-5-1942. PhD, National Scientist & Professor Emeritus, Biochemistry and Toxicology Labs, University of Philippines Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines. Cruz's pioneering work on Conus venoms and her isolation of the first conotoxins led to discoveries of channel- specific and receptor-specific peptides now used in neuroscience as tools in studying how the brain works and as lead compounds for drug development. She is a member of the National Academy of Science & Technology of the Philippines, and has won the Sven Brohult Award of Sweden, Outstanding Scientist & Technologist Award of Brunei Darusssalam, and the UNESCO L’Oreal Prize for Women in Science 2010 (Asia Pacific region).

OLIVA, Glaucius (Brazil) b. 5-10-1959. PhD, Full Professor in Structural Biology & Biophysics, Universidade Sao Paulo Instituto de Fisca de Sao Carlos, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Oliva was the key leader in the establishment of protein crystallography research in Brazil. His work on Chagas disease has led to the discovery of several new inhibitors of parasitic enzymes, promising new drugs for the treatment of this endemic illness. Among his other notable contributions are his determination of the structures of several proteins involved in Alzheimer’s, leishmaniasis, schistossomiasis  and malaria. Elected member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he has won the Brazilian National Order of Scientific Merit (Comendador).

ZHAO, Guo-ping (China) b. 15-8-1948. PhD, Professor, Key Laboratory of Synthetic Biology, Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology (IPPE), Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences (SIBS), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Shanghai, China. Zhao has been working towards systematic elucidation of molecular mechanisms of microbial physiology and pathology. He initiated the bacterial genome project in China and implemented comparative, functional and evolutionary genomic studies for important microbial systems. His recent study about metabolic regulation via enzyme acetylome is a fundamental contribution to life science. He is a Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and has won the Lilly Asia Outstanding Achievement Award, the HLHL Prize, and the Shanghai Natural Science Prize twice.

CHANG, Wen-Chang (Taiwan, China): b. 28-11-1947. PhD, Chair, Department of Pharmacology, College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan, China. Chang is an acknowledged leader in the characterization of the regulation of 12-lipoxygenase expression in tissues. He was also he first to report of 6-keto 1-a-prostaglandin. He has been honoured for his work through the Distinguished Research Award (four times) of the National Science Council of Taiwan, the Taiwan Science Academy Award and the National Chair Professorship of Taiwan (2001-2004).

FARRANT, Jill Margaret (South Africa) b. 5-12-1960. PhD, Full Professor & Research Chair in Molecular Physiology of Plant Desiccation Tolerance, Dept of Molecular & Cell Biology, University of Cape Town, South Africa. Farrant is a world leader in the field of plant desiccation tolerance (DT). Her research contributions to the understanding of vegetative DT has come from the molecular (‘omics’), biochemical and physiological levels allowing a systems based understanding of this trait. Significant contributions range from the demonstration that genes used in DT of seeds are utilized in vegetative tissues under environmental vs developmental cues; to that of the unique functioning of antioxidants, photosynthetic energy receptors and other protective molecules. Fellow of the South African Science Academy and the Royal Society of South Africa, she has won the SAAB Medal and the DST Distinguished Woman in Science Award.

GUHL, Felipe (Colombia): b. 14-07-1949. MSc, Full Professor and Director, Tropical Parasitology Research Centre, CIMPAT, Universidad de los Andes, Bogota, Colombia. An outstanding tropical parasitologist, Guhl helped launch the national programme for diagnosis of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas’ disease), and its control and prevention, using new strategies and policies. Elected member of the Colombia Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences, and of the National Academy of Medicine, he has won the Alejandro Angel Escobar Award, the “Life and work” award of the Alumni Association of Great Britain, and the John Humphrey Prize for Immunology of the British Immunology Society.

CHEN, Pei-Jer (Taiwan, China): b. 5-12-1955. PhD, Professor, Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, China. Chen's research has been in three fields: (1) molecular biology of hepatitis D and B viruses; (2) the genomics of liver cancer; and (3) emerging infections. A member of Academia Sinica, he has received the Science and Technology Award of Taiwan, the National Outstanding Research Lectureship and the Outstanding Research Award of the National Science Council.

MAJUMDER, Partha Pratim (India). b. 6-9-1952. PhD, Professor and Head, Human Genetics Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, India. Majumder has developed novel methods and paradigms for genetic epidemiological studies of common diseases and for mapping the genes underlying them. His more recent and highly acclaimed work on genomic diversity among the ethnic groups of India has provided a deep understanding of the peopling of the Indian subcontinent. Fellow of two science academies of India, he has won, among others, the GD Birla, Bhasin and Ranbaxy Awards, and also the New Millennium Gold Medal of India in 2000 and the TWAS Prize in Biology for 2009.

QADRI, Firdausi (Bangladesh): b. 31-3-1951. PhD, Senior Scientist and Head, Immunology Unit, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR, B), Dhaka, Bangladesh. Qadri's holistic approach over 20 years in immunology and vaccinology has created an impact worldwide in cholera and other enteric infections and with emphasis on health problems in developing countries. This has resulted in an innovative project in Bangladesh for mass immunization with cholera vaccine to reduce the burden of disease. She is an elected fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS), and has won, among other honours, the 2006 Gold Medal for outstanding research in Biological Sciences from the BAS, and the 2009 'Outstanding scientist award' of the Bangladesh Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

WANG, Hongyang (China): b. 31-1-1952. PhD. Professor, Chief Physician and Director, Clinical Treatment II department, Eastern hepatobiliary surgery hospital, Shanghai, China. Wang has identified a set of novel biomarkers and monoclonal antibodies for tumor diagnosis and treatment. She has also characterized several HCC-related genes, and the function of SRP on innate immunity and inflammation signalling. Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, she has received the HLHL Foundation Prize in 2004, and the first Award of Chinese Woman Doctors in 2009.

AUGUSTO, Ohara (Brazil) b. 29-1-1948. PhD, Professor, Departamento de Bioquimica, Instituto de Quimica, Universidade de Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Augusto's research studies have helped to solidify free radicals and oxidants as physiologically prevalent and relevant in health and disease. International recognition of her work is attested by publications in high impact journals, international prizes and a considerable impact index for a scientist working in a developing country (H index=33). Elected Fellow of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, she has won the SCOPUS Award 2009, Commendador Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit 2006, and the 2002 silver medal for Biology & medicine of the International EPR Society.

BAO, Xinhe (China): b. 26-8-1959. PhD, Professor, State Key Laboratory of Catalysis, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dalian, China. Bao is well known for his fundamental contributions to the understanding of catalysis and its application in energy conversion processes. Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and of the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK, he has won the Natural Science Awards of both the Liaoning Province and of China, the Distinguished Young Scientist honour of Qiu Shi Foundation Hong Kong, and has been a Humboldt Fellow.

GUPTA, Mahabir Prashad (Panama): b. 3-10-1942. PhD, DSc (hc), Professor and Director, Centre for Pharmacognostic Research on Panamanian Flora, University of Panama, Panama. Gupta is renowned for his pioneering research on ethnobotany, bioprospecting, and drug discovery from tropical biodiversity in Latin America, discovery of lead molecules for anti-parasitic, anti-Alzheimer and cytotoxic activities, and creation of a Natural Products Drug Discovery Research Centre in Panama. Fellow of the Academy of Sciences of Latin America, he has been honoured as a Distinguished Scientist - 2008 in the National Investigators System National Secretariat for Science Technology & Innovation of Panama, and the Interciencia Award 2008 for Health Sciences.

LEE, Yuan-Pern (Taiwan, China): b. 25-1-1952. PhD, Professor, Department of Applied Chemistry and Institute of Molecular Science National Chiao Tung University, Hsinhu, Taiwan. An expert in time-resolved FT spectroscopy, two-colour resonant four-wave mixing and matrix isolation, Lee has made notable contributions to spectroscopy and dynamics of free radicals in atmospheric and planetary chemistry. Fellow of Academia Sinica, he is a life-time professor and has won the Academic Achievement Medal, and the Wu-Shan-Ling Award.

MOUDACHIROU, Mansourou (Benin) b. 1945. PhD, Professor, Laboratoire de Pharmacognosie et des Huiles Essentielles (LAPHE), Université d’Abomey Calavi, Cotonou, Benin. Moudachirou has internationally recognised expertise in chemistry especially relating to essential oils and medicinal plants. On the theoretical side, has contributed to the identification of products after dehydration of dimethyl-3,4 hexanol, and the synthesis of arylurethanes from lactic (S) acid for splitting of racemic bases. In practical areas, he has contributed to the valorisation of local resources through: (1) the study of essential oils and aromatic plants of the Benin-Togo-Ghana area with applications in foods, beverages and aromatherapy; and (2) evaluation of ethnobotanical medicinal plants of Benin for the treatment of malaria, bovine dermatophilosis, Buruli ulcer etc. He is Secrétaire Perpétuel of the National Academy of Science, Benin, member of the West African Society of Chemistry (SOACHIM), Burkina Faso, and has won the Diplôme de Mérite de l’Université du Togo in 1990 and Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite du Bénin in 2002.

RAMASESHA, Suryanarayana Sastry (India): b. 16-1-1950. PhD, Professor, Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. Ramasesha is a well-renowned and very innovative theoretical chemist who models static and dynamic properties, notably for electronic and magnetic phenomena in molecular solids. He has developed exact many-body techniques for small systems and has extended modern approaches like density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and quantum Monte Carlo methods. Fellow of INSA and IASc, Ramasesha has won all the major awards that Indian science has to offer.

BOUSMINA, Mostapha (Morocco) b. 15-2-1961. PhD, General Director of INANOTECH (Institute of Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology INANOTECH)/Chancellor of the Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology, MAScIR (Moroccan Advanced Science, Innovation and Research), Rabat, Morocco Bousmina’s work has brought crucial contributions on the dynamics of the behaviour of drops in emulsions. He worked out various models that quantitatively describe the complex interfacial behaviour in fluid mixtures and which are now largely used in the literature. He synthesized the first carbon nanosprings and carbon nano solenoids. He is presently interested in graphene-based nanomaterials. Fellow of the Hassan II Academy of Science & technology, he is Laureate of the Grand Prize on Innovation in Scientific Research and Technology Research.

CHAUDHURI, Bidyut Baran (India) b. 7-12-1950. PhD, Professor & Head, Computer Vision & Pattern Recognition Department, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, India. Chaudhuri is renowned for his outstanding contributions on speech analysis, natural language processing and optical character recognition of Indian scripts Devanagari and Bangla as well as the theoretical development on pattern recognition and Image processing. Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, he has won the Homi Bhabha Fellowship and the Nehru Fellowship Awards, Wadhwa Gold Medal, and is currently a JC Bose Fellow of India.

XU, Ningsheng (China) b. 7-7-1957. PhD, Professor, State Key Laboratories of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies, Sun-Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China. Xu is a leading figure in the field of vacuum micro/nano electronics, with major contributions in design, preparation and application of novel cold cathode materials and devices. Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he has won China’s National Science & Technology Award for Natural Sciences twice, and the Ha Shi Gu Chi Takayoshi Award.

ZANOTTO, Edgar Dutra (Brazil) b. 7-6-1954. PhD, Professor, Department of Materials Engineering, Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos, Sao Carlos, Brazil. Zanotto created one of the first Brazilian research centres on vitreous materials (LaMaV – UFSCar) in Brazil. He is the founder of a spin-off company (VITROVITA) which develops and produces bioactive glass-ceramics for dental applications. (*glass-ceramics are polycrystalline materials obtained by the controlled crystallization of certain glasses. These high-tech materials have extensive domestic and industrial applications). Fellow of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he has won the TWAS Prize in Engineering Sciences in 2010, and the National Order of Scientific Merit, Brazil, in 2006.

DIAB, Roseanne (South Africa) b. 11-11-1949. PhD, Atmospheric Scientist and Executive Officer, Academy of Science of South Africa, Pretoria, South Africa. Diab is known for her work on: Understanding chemical and dynamical influences on tropospheric ozone variability over South Africa – relationship to synoptic weather systems; Long range transport off Africa's east coast and contribution to ozone maxima over Reunion, Indian Ocean; and Development of a novel classification of vertical ozone profiles to distinguish dynamical and chemical influences. Fellow of the Academy of Science of South Africa, she currently serves as the President of the South African national chapter of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).

GUNTUPALLI, V. R. Prasad (India) b. 22-11-1958. PhD, Professor, Department of Geology, University of Delhi, Delhi, India. Guntupalli has made outstanding contributions to our understanding of Cretaceous biodiversity of the Deccan Volcanic Province, the evolution of biota on the Indian landmass during its northward flight and its palaeobiogeographic significance, and on the evolutionary history of eutherian mammals on the former Gondwanaland in general. Fellow of all 3 science academies of India, he has won the Bhatnagar Prize, the National Mineral Award, and won grants from the American Museum of Natural History, Society of Vertebrate Paleontologists, USA, and is a JC Bose Fellow.

STORCHI BERGMANN, Thaisa (Brazil) b. 19-12-1955. PhD, Professor, Instituto de Fisica, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Campus do Vale, Porto Alegre, Brazil. Storchi Bergmann's main scientific contributions are in the study of starburst and nuclear activity in galaxies, from the discovery of an accretion disk around a supermassive black hole (SMBH) -- revealing its structure and how it evolves with time -- to the study of the surrounding galaxy and active galaxies in general, being a pioneer in the use of integral field spectrographs in the investigation of the mechanisms of feeding and feedback of active galactic nuclei. Fellow of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, she has won the UNITV Prize in 2009, and the Elsevier/Scopus Prize in 2010.

ZHENG, Yong-fei (China): b. 14-10-1959. Professor, School of Earth & Space Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China. Zheng is noted for pioneering contributions to fluid regime and chemical geodynamics of continental subduction zones, outstanding contributions to theoretical calculations of mineral oxygen isotope fractionation factors, and his quantitative link of stable isotopes to geochronology of igneous and metamorphic minerals. Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he has won the HLHL Prize, and the Changjian Scholar Award.

DA SILVA, Hilário Alencar (Brazil): b. 20-9-1953. DSc, Professor, Federal University of Alagoas, Institute de Mathematica, Maceio-Al, Brazil. Da Silva's outstanding contribution has been on the r-stability of immersions of hypersurfaces in space-forms. His paper on hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature in spheres has results that have been used by many others. A member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he has received the Medalho do Merito Cientfico of Brazil.

LE, Tuan Hoa (Vietnam) b. 27-8-1957. PhD, DSc, Professor and Deputy Director, Institute of Mathematics, Vietnamese Academy of Sciences and Technology, Hanoi, Vietnam. Le Tuan Hoa’s major achievements are in structure theorems in the theory of toric varieties and on the Casteinuove-Mumford Regularity, which has led to new developments in these fields. Recently he also obtained striking results on the complexity of graded rings and projective varieties. He won the 1985 National Prize for Young Mathematicians.

MIATELLO, Roberto Jorge (Argentina) b. 11-6-1947. PhD, Professor UN Cordoba, Facultad de Matemática, Astronomía y Física, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Córdoba, Argentina. Miatello is known for his contributions in: Selberg trace formula and heat kernel on locally symmetric spaces of nonpositive curvature; Automorphic forms and Whittaker vectors, resolvents, lattice points; Applications of Kuznetsov sum formulae for R-rank one groups; and Study of  p-spectrum, length, Dirac and Atiyah-Patodi-Singer spectrum for compact flat manifolds. He is a member of Union Matemática Argentina, Academia Nacional de Ciencias (Argentina), and has won the Diploma al Mérito en Matemática,  Fundación Konex, 2003.

YAO, Andrew Chi-Chih (USA/China) b. 24-12-1946. PhD, DSc, DSC (hon causa). Professor, Dean of Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. Yao has helped shape the field of theoretical computer science through his fundamental contributions to the theory of computation and its applications, including the complexity-based theory of pseudorandom number generation, cryptography, and communication complexity. Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the US National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Academia Sinica and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the recipient of the George Polya Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Donald E. Knuth Prize, the A.M. Turing Award and the Pan Wen-Yuan Research Award.

BRANDAN, María Ester (Chile): b. 28-11-1951. PhD, Professor, Instituto de Fisica, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), Mexico City. In the field of heavy-ion nuclear physics, Brandan  has identified refractive effects in the elastic scattering angular distributions, indicative of weak absorption. This observation helped determine the main properties of the nuclear potential as the descriptor of interactions between “light” heavy nuclei. A member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, she has won the UNAM “Catedratico” award and the Mexican Physics Society Award for the Development of Physics in Mexico.

BRITO CRUZ, Carlos Henrique (Brazil): b. 19-7-1956. DSc, Full Professor, Physics Institute, Unicamp, Campinas, Brazil. In the field of ultrafast phenomena, Brito Cruz and colleagues demonstrated that 6 femtosecond pulses, which are only three optical cycles long, could be generated by compensating dispersion to third-order. These short pulses allowed studies to be done in bacteriorodhopsin, organic dyes and semiconductor films. Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he has won the UNICAMP Research Incentive Prize, UNICAMP Award "Zeferino Vaz", Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit, and the Conrado Wessel Prize.

CHANG, Shih-Lin (Taiwan, China) b. 1-5-1946. PhD, National Chair Professor & Director, National Synchrotron Radiation Research Centre, National Tsinghua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, China. Chang is well known for his outstanding contributions in developing X-ray multiple diffraction methods to solve the X-ray phase problem in crystallography and condensed matter physics and being the first to demonstrate resonance interference of the X-ray Fabry-Perot resonator using dynamical diffraction from crystalline solids. An Academician of Academia Sinica, Chang has won, among other prizes, the Sun Yat-Sen award, the BE Warren Diffraction Physics Award, and the Hou Chin- Duei Outstanding Honorary Award.

EL-KHOZONDAR, Hala (Palestinian Aut. Terr.) b. 17-1-1965. PhD, Associate Professor, Islamic University of Gaza, Palestinian Territory. El-Khozondar is recognized for his fundamental research on the behaviour of optical fibre grating sensors under different stress effects, and for further important contributions towards the understanding of magneto-optical isolators, metamaterial devices, electro-optical waveguides, and the microstructural evolution of polycrystalline materials, with relevance to integrated optical devices and the performance of metals and ceramics. FUCHS, Harald (Germany) b. 15-4-1951. Dr. rer. nat., Professor, Physikalisches Institut, Universitaet Muenster, Wilhelm Klemm-Str. 10, 48149 Muenster, Germany. Fuchs is renowned for his development of new nanoscopic instruments, the theoretical understanding of nanoprobe-surface interactions; the generation and characterization of functional and selforganized organic systems, and nanobiotechnology; the first atomic STM resolution of graphite and development of dynamic force spectroscopy and near-field optics. Fellow of the German Academy of Sciences, and also of the Academy of Sci & Engg, he has won the Philip-Morris-Research Prize "Herausforderung Zukunft", Nanotechnology, and the Emich Plaque of the Austrian Society for Analytical Chemistry Federal Cross of Merit.

KRISHNAMURTHY, Hulikal R. (India) b. 21-9-1951. PhD, Professor & Chairman, Physics Department, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. Krishnamurthy has made outstanding, internationally well known contributions to condensed matter theory, especially strong correlation physics,  eg.,  universal behaviour in quantum impurity physics, strong correlation phenomena in lattice models of fermions and bosons, theory of colossal magneto-resistance, and ab-initio density-functional and simulational studies of phase transitions in soft matter. Fellow of all science academies of India, he has consistently had the first rank in school and college, and has won the Ramanna Prize and the JC Bose National Fellowship.

SUN, Chang-Pu (China): b. 17-7-1962. PhD, Professor, Institute of Theoretical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. Sun proposed the concept of q-deformed bosons, developed the high-order correction method to two quantum adiabatic approximations, established the self-consistent factorization model for quantum decoherence, and explored the quantum manipulation and coherent integration of quantum devices, such as the cooling of nanomechanical resonators, and Josephson junction qubits. Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he won the State Natural Science Award in 2008.

CHOPRA, Kanchan (India) b. 14-5-1944. PhD, President, Indian Society of Ecological Economics, and former Director, Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi, India. She is unarguably the most significant India-based economist in the past 30 years. She has created an empirical and sensitive literature on human-nature interactions in rural India, focusing on local institutions and the place of common property resources (water, forests) in rural life and the distress migration caused by their degradation.  Fellow of the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics and Member, Expert Committee on Climate Change, India, she is an editorial advisor to the new journal Environment and Development Economics.

CLAYTON, Anthony (United Kingdom): b. 31-1-1957. PhD, Alcan Professor of Caribbean Sustainable Development, University of the West Indies, Jamaica. He leads programmes of collaborative research developing new models of development planning. These use techniques such as horizon-scanning, foresighting, technology roadmapping, integrated assessment and integrated policy development. They help identify possible future social, technological, economic, and environmental scenarios, and then map out a robust development strategy. Member of the Caribbean Academy of Science, and of Inter-American Network of Academies of Science, he has won the 8th World Congress of Consuls Award of Excellence.

GHOSH, Ratna (Canada) b. 23-10-1939. PhD, James McGill Professor and W.C. Macdonald Professor of Education, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Ghosh's research has had significant influence on the foundations of multi-cultural and international education, women’s development, as well as women’s promotion and retention in science, engineering and technology. A Fellow of Royal Society of Canada and of the European Academy of Arts and Sciences, she has won the Golden Jubilee Medal from H.M. Queen Elizabeth, membership of Order of Canada, and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

LIN, Wenjuan (China) b. 1-7-1943. PhD, Professor, Behavioural Sciences, Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. Lin had initiated studies of biopsychology in China and, by using multidisciplinary scientific means, revealed for the first time the physiological basis of adjunctive behaviour and stress-induced behaviour. She also opened up a new field of psychoneuroimmunology research in China and demonstrated psychological processes in modulation of behavioural-related immune function. Member of the New York Academy of Sciences, she has won the Awards for Excellent Professor and Outstanding Contributions from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

WANG, Shouyang (China): b. 20-7-1958. PhD, Professor, Centre for Forecasting Science, Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, Beijing, China. Wang has made fundamental contributions to the establishment of non-cooperative multi-criteria game theory. His approach for conflict resolution was successfully applied to mediating civil disputes and international environmental negotiations. His text mining, econometrics, intelligence and integration (TEI@I) method has been successful in forecasting foreign exchange rates and other similar issues. These have become a key reference for the Chinese government to design economic policies. He has won the CAS Young Scientist Prize, the Chinese Science and Technology Prize for Young Scientists, and the Excellent Supervision Award of CAS for three years.
